This exciting subject will offer you the opportunity to investigate and develop an understanding of the world's most dynamic and fastest-growing industries in a vocational context. The units studied will allow you to enjoy a variety of learning experiences in a vocational and educationally stimulating environment.

The course helps you understand the different elements which make up the tourism industry: customers, stakeholders, technology, destinations and host communities. You will learn about the wider ethical, social and cultural dimensions of tourism, and they will understand its impact on the environment and the importance of sustainable development.


What will you study in Year 13?

Unit 1: The UK Tourism Product. This examination based unit provides an opportunity to learn about tourism in the UK. You will study topics that cover the various attractions the UK has to offer, the importance of jobs in tourism to our economy and the impact tourism can have on our future.


Unit 2: Worldwide Tourism Destinations. This internally assessed piece of coursework will give you the chance to carry out some research into chosen destinations in order to build a detailed portfolio on them. You will gain an understanding on the reasons for travel to certain places, what travel options are available and how to plan a marketing campaign.


How will it be useful for you?

The teaching and learning approaches associated with this subject encourage independent and active learning. In practical and relevant contexts, you will benefit from the opportunity to feel closer to the world of work.

The course will allow you to develop a number of valuable skills such as report writing, research, evaluation and problem-solving skills, the ability to plan, prioritise and meet deadlines and the ability to work both independently and within teams. These could be used not only in your other subjects but also in life after Lurgan College.
