The Public Speaking Society meets regularly at Lurgan College. We meet to discuss upcoming competitions and support each other when researching, writing and delivering our speeches.

 

There are a series of competitions we enter throughout the year. In September we enter the Poetry Aloud Competition. This is followed by the Soroptimist Public Speaking Competition in October. In November, we take part in the BPW Public Speaking Competition and finally the group takes part in the Edgar Graham Memorial Public Speaking Competition hosted at Stormont in March.

 

The Public Speaking Society is an excellent club to join for all those wishing to work on their public speaking skills, grow in confidence and meet new friends.

In the 2022/2023 season our public speaking society excelled. Eliana Hynes achieved a first-place position at the regional heat of the Soroptimist Public Speaking Competition. Eliana then went on to represent her school and region at the Northern Ireland Final in Hillsborough in February. 

 This year Joel Cordner entered the prestigious Edgar Graham Memorial Public Speaking Competition held at Stormont. Joel was praised by the judge for his selection of an interesting topic that was introduced in an engaging way. He was encouraged to keep working on his craft and his significant ability was recognised.

In the BPW Competition, our team from Lurgan College (made up of Bethany Blair, Luke Teggart and Eliana Hynes), progressed to the UK Inter-Regional Final hosted in the Senate Chamber at Stormont. It was here that they were declared BPW UK Inter-Regional Champions 2023!

In 2019/2020 we experienced some great success with Rosie Lappin achieving a first-place position at the regional heat of the Soroptimist Public Speaking Competition. Rosie then went on to compete at the Northern Ireland Final in Hillsborough in February.
