What We Offer:

Key Stage 4 (Years 11 & 12):

In Years 11 & 12, our Careers guidance forms an integral part of the Learning for Life and Work curriculum. Here, students delve into essential employability skills, from crafting compelling CVs to honing interview techniques. We ensure they are well-versed in understanding the dynamic labour market through practical engagement with economic data. Moreover, in Year 12, each pupil benefits from individual careers advice sessions with experts from the Department of Economy Careers Service. Collaborating with the Craigavon Area Learning Community, we also host a Careers Convention, connecting Key Stage 3 & 4 pupils with employers and further/higher education providers.

Key Stage 5 (Years 13 & 14):

Moving into Years 13 & 14, students immerse themselves in a diverse range of experiences aimed at broadening their horizons and preparing them for the next chapter of their lives. They undertake work experience placements and engage extensively with higher education providers, including those aligned with Northern Ireland Executive's visionary 10X economy plans. Year 13 sees participation in Careers Fayres, UCAS conventions, and university open days. Year 14 pupils are assigned a dedicated careers tutor who provides tailored support throughout the university, higher education, or apprenticeship application process. Our focus extends to exploring emerging opportunities like degree apprenticeships, school leaver recruitment schemes, and international study options.

 Our Focus on Gatsby Benchmarks:

At Lurgan College, we are committed to meeting and exceeding the Gatsby Benchmarks to ensure the highest quality of careers provision. While our ultimate goal is to ensure all pupils are informed and confident about their futures, we are currently directing our efforts towards three key benchmarks:

  1. Gatsby 4: Careers in the Curriculum: We integrate careers guidance seamlessly into our curriculum, ensuring that every student has access to essential career-related learning experiences.
  2. Gatsby 5: Encounters with Employers: We facilitate meaningful interactions between our students and employers, providing invaluable insights into various industries and career paths.
  3. Gatsby 8: Personal Guidance: We offer personalised support to each student, guiding them through crucial decision-making processes and equipping them with the tools they need to succeed beyond school.

Career Ready Mentoring Initiative:

Introducing our newest initiative for the 2024/25 academic year: Career Ready Mentoring. This program pairs students with professional mentors in their chosen fields, providing personalised guidance, industry insights, networking opportunities, and skill development. Students can express interest through the Careers Department to participate and benefit from this invaluable mentorship experience.
