EXCELLENT A LEVEL RESULTS AT THE COLLEGE

Lurgan College pupils and staff are celebrating another year of outstanding individual and collective examination performances at Advanced Level.
These excellent results are, once again, clear and irrefutable evidence of the success of the tried and tested Dickson Plan which, for over forty years, has furnished pupils with necessary skills to help them reach their academic potential.
For an amazing tenth year in a row the Y14 pupils of Lurgan College recorded an over 99.6% pass rate in all subjects offered at A Level, which compares very favourably with the UK national pass rate of 97.6%. Many grades A* were also achieved by our high-flying pupils. The 83% of A*-C grades is also well in excess of the UK national average of 75.4%. Grades A* and A were again by far the most common grades, accounting for one third of the total grades recorded while the UK national average sits at just 27%. Around one fifth of the applicants achieved at least 3 A grades.

“While, of course, we continue to be encouraged by these year on year impressive statistics, the most pleasing aspect of these excellent results by far for me” according to Mr Robinson “is that, once again, the vast majority of our pupils are now looking forward to taking up their places in their chosen universities and colleges here in N Ireland and across the United Kingdom.
Worthy of particular mention are Orly Watson (Moyallon PS) and Hannah Webb (King’s Park PS) who achieved an outstanding 4 straight As (including some A*s) in their A Levels – a tremendous achievement by any standard. I am pleased to report that Orly Watson, as the result of his fantastic A Level performances will be taking up his place in Somerville College at Oxford University in October to read Music.

18 pupils in total recorded at least 3 straight grade As in their subjects and a further 8 pupils obtained at least 2 grade As.
The students with 3 straight grade As were Natalie Barr (Waringstown PS), Jonathan Buckley (Richmount PS), Catherine Dynes (Bleary PS), Victoria Flanagan (Carrick PS), Kristian Glenn (King’s Park PS), Laura Gordon (Bleary PS), Zara Jackson (King’s Park PS), Graeme Laverty (Waringstown PS), Mark McConville (King’s Park PS), Andrew McNabb (Moyallon PS), Nicholas Moore (King’s Park PS), Louise Murray (Carrick PS), Chloe Patterson (King’s Park PS), Kim Scott (Carrick PS), Emma Watson (Carrick PS) and Shannon Webster (King’s Park PS).
Those pupils with at least 2 grade As were Claire Dickson (King’s Park PS), Stephen Foster (Portadown Independent Christian School), Christopher McBurney (Maralin PS), Matthew Porter (Maralin PS), Naomi Robinson (King’s Park PS), Kathryn Stevenson (King’s Park PS), Jessica Thompson (World Christian Academy) and Josh Thornbury (Waringstown PS).
As Headmaster of Lurgan College, I am extremely proud of what my pupils have achieved in their A Level examinations. At the College we pay tribute to the pupils’ Primary Schools for their early years education and, to the teaching staff of Lurgan Junior High School who expertly guided the young pupils in Years 8-10. I also acknowledge the professionalism of my own teachers who continually demonstrate the highest levels of dedication and commitment, providing the very highest quality of educational experience for the pupils. I am also indebted to our pupils’ very supportive parents who consistently work closely the school and who, I am sure, are justly proud of their young people’s examination success.
We wish all our Y14 pupils God’s richest blessing as they set out on the next stage of their careers and we look forward to seeing them taking their rightful places as leaders in our society in the coming years.
AS LEVEL EXAMINATION RESULTS 2011
The results achieved by the Y13 pupils of Lurgan College at Advanced Subsidiary Level are also most commendable, auguring well for the pupils’ performances in their Advanced Level examinations next June.
The overall pass rate was most pleasing 96%, among one of the highest ever recorded at the College and 2% above the NI Grammar School average. This is all the more creditable considering almost every pupil studied 4 subjects to AS Level.
2 pupils managed to achieve at least 4 grade As and 4 obtained at least 3 grade As in their AS Level examinations. Another 16 pupils secured at least 2 grade As. With over 73% of the 418 entries graded at A-C, this has been another pleasing year for Lurgan College at AS Level.
The vast majority of subjects recorded over 75% A-C grades; Art & Design once again merits special mention, however, as for the 10th successive year no pupil received less than a grade A at either AS or Advanced Level - a most impressive record by any standards!
These most pleasing results constitute the first half of the pupils’ Advanced Level study and they will undoubtedly stand them in good stead as they prepare for study at A2 Level next year.
The students with 4 straight As in their subjects were David Harrison (Bleary PS) and David Knox (King’s Park PS).
The students with 3 grade As were Emily Alexander (Waringstown PS), Lynsey-Jayne Fulton (King’s Park PS), Philip Gardiner (King’s Park PS) and Sarah Martin (King’s Park PS).
The following pupils achieved 2 grade As: Matthew Gilchrist (King’s Park PS), Richard Hannan (Waringstown PS), David Irwin (King’s Park PS), Kathryn McClune (King’s Park PS), Dylan McClurg (King’s Park PS), Ross McCoy (King’s Park PS), Lisa McGahie (Moira PS), Chelsea McMullan (Waringstown PS), Luke Osborne (Carrick PS), Alanna Richardson (Bleary PS), Emma Richardson (King’s Park PS), Nicholas Salt (Portadown Independent Christian School), Megan Sloan (Carrick PS), Joel Smith (King’s Park PS), James Stafford (Waringstown PS) and Amy Wilson (King’s Park PS).
I congratulate all of the pupils, their parents and their teachers on these most encouraging AS performances.
