AS Travel & Tourism

The AS Travel and Tourism course have been designed to form a qualification which provides knowledge and understanding of this vocational area. It is an ideal qualification for those candidates who want a broad range of skills to complement their existing AS level choices. This course is also beneficial as it will provide an excellent foundation for students to progress to further or higher education, training or employment.
In this subject you will discover that Travel and Tourism is a complex and dynamic industry composed of a large number of diverse organisations and learn of their inter-relationships and interdependency. You will investigate the development of travel and tourism and the roles of the different sectors of the travel and tourism industry. You will also have a chance to complete two pieces of coursework which will help you develop an important understanding of customer service in the work place and the processes involved in researching and organising holidays.
What will you study
- Unit 1: Inside Travel & Tourism (33.3% assessed by one 2 hour exam in Summer)
This unit is the theory element of the course and provides an introduction to Travel and Tourism. You will investigate the development of the industry and the different sectors of the industry.
- Unit 2: A People Industry (33.3% assessed by coursework submitted at Easter)
This unit provides an insight into the key principles and skills of customer service in the workplace. You will visit The Culloden hotel, Belfast to investigate their induction and training programs, take part in role-play scenarios and write a report based on your findings. -
Unit 3: Travel Destinations (33.3% assessed by coursework submitted at Christmas)
This unit will provide you with an opportunity to investigate a number of tourist destinations and create holidays for various tourist types also consider trends and the future popularity of those destinations.
How useful will it be for you?
The teaching and learning approaches associated with this subject encourage independent and active learning. In practical and relevant contexts you will benefit from the opportunity to feel closer to the world of work. The course will allow you to develop a number of valuable skills such as report writing, research, evaluation and problem-solving skills, the ability to plan, prioritise and meet deadlines and the ability to work both independently and within teams. These could be used not only in your other A level subjects but also in life after Lurgan College.
